Financial Wisdom Begins at the Dining Table, Not the Bank
When My Toddler Shares Her Apple, She's Already Learning More About Money Than Most Adults
I watched with pride as my 16-month-old daughter, still learning to speak full sentences, carefully handed pieces of her apple to everyone at the table before taking her own bite.
She didn't learn this from a book or a class. She learned by watching her mother, through gentle guidance and consistent example.
It struck me: Isn't this exactly how children should learn their most important lessons about money?
When she shared that apple—understanding that resources can be divided, that giving brings joy, that everyone's needs matter—wasn't she learning the very foundations of financial wisdom?
Long before our children understand what money is, they're absorbing how we handle resources, how we share, what we value, and who we help.
🔹 What if the most important financial education happens not when we open their first bank account, but in these everyday moments at home?
🔹 What if trustworthiness with small things now prepares them for responsibility with bigger things later?
🔹 What if the way we handle an apple today shapes how they'll handle their assets tomorrow?
These questions have led me down a path I never expected. What began as parental observation has transformed into what might be the most important creative work of my career.
Because I've come to believe that financial literacy doesn't begin with counting coins. It begins with building character, right at home.
While I'm not quite ready to reveal all the details yet, but as I put the finishing touches on this labor of love, I'm both nervous and excited.
For now, I'm curious:
What was the first lesson about sharing or resources that you remember learning as a child? And who taught it to you?
I'll be sharing more about this journey in the coming weeks. If you're interested in how we can raise financially wise children through character education, I'd love to connect.
